Grow Up On Grow-ops, Already!

With Halloween on the calendar this month, this scary news from Klein's government goblins seemed to fit right in. Alberta's Solicitor-General and Minister of Children's Services, Heather Forsyth, announced her government's plans to enact legislation in the spring allowing provincial henchman to snatch children from their homes if it is suspected that drugs are being used, grown, manufactured, or sold. If passed, it will be the first legislation of it's kind in the country. Big Brother is getting desparate-threatening to seize children if the parents don't obey what amounts to arbitrary laws. The bill specifically targets meth labs, grow-ops and traffickers or users. Attempting to equate methedrine and marijuana is ludicrous-no reasonable-thinking person is going to buy that! (however, the White House Wingnuts will undoubtedly applaud the move).

Forsyth says there are four situations in which children will be removed from a home: “If they are involved in a grow-op situation, if they are involved in a meth house, if there is drug trafficking or if there’s drug use being involved.”

Incidentally, this is the same Heather Forsyth who tried to intervene with the courts in an assault charge against her son a couple years ago involving his ex-girlfriend. Maybe her child should have been 'rescued' from the home to protect him from a mother who would try to interfere with the very wheels of justice itself!

It's funny, but the ones whining and stomping their feet the loudest for crackdowns are the first ones trying to convince us that when their child goes out and makes some stupid mistake, they should be the exception.

Anyway, there are already adequate laws providing for the removal of children from unsafe environments-whether it's rampant mould, fire hazard concerns, abuse or what have you-if there's a health or safety issue, the child goes. And so it should be. But allowing authorities to enter a home and remove a child because Mom and Dad were smoking a joint while watching 'The Twilight Zone' is ridiculous.

We seem too quick to forget (or too slow to grasp) the fact that the health and safety concerns associated with cannabis-use stem from it's illegality and are nothing inherent in the plant itself. On the contrary, there's a growing mountain of evidence that suggests that cannabis is not only a fairly benign drug, but has a multitude of medicinal applications as well.

So, it looks like all we have left here, folks, is a lot of serious anxiety around states of mind. As Mckenna said, "The important thing about cannabis is its consciousness-altering efffect, and I think the Establishment is perfectly aware that that's the issue. They're keeping cannabis illegal because it causes people to question the social values that they're being programmed with."

The unwillingness of the Klein government (or any other, for that matter) to make the distinction between substances like meth, cocaine, and heroin, and cannabis continues to cause grief for thousands of harmless souls each year. And now the Klein government wants to compound that grief by giving discretionary powers to authorities to seize children where the parents may only be smoking weed.

It's been said before, but it's worth repeating: 'What we do in our bedrooms, what we put in our bodies, how we handle our reproductive choices-these are things they want to control. It's basically a totalitarian agenda-they very much consider it their business.
