EPS Shoots Suspect 7 Times
EPS accused of excessive force
Which one is
'Armed and Dangerous'?
Yet again, EPS is under fire for their heavy-handed use of excessive force against possible suspects. They are currently being investigated for shooting a man seven times during a call to a domestic dispute.
Edmonton's police service is developing such a reputation for its regular misconduct, that it was even mentioned in the latest US State Department's annual report on human rights. The report noted that "During the year, police in Edmonton were accused of using excessive force when responding to minor infractions in the tourist district. Among other incidents, police allegedly knocked a man to the ground for jaywalking; repeatedly kicked a person for swearing at officers; and repeatedly hit a handcuffed person in the face."
Officers responded to an early evening call at an Edmonton apartment complex regarding a man threatening his ex-wife and child. Several EPS members confronted the man outside the complex who was holding the knife in a 'threatening' manner.
Officers yelled at the man and told him to put down his knife; and although the man never actually attacked them, EPS officers drew their weapons and fired seven shots at the man because the four officers felt an 'immediate threat to their lives' and 'had no other options availabe to them.'
Apparently the 21 tasers EPS purchased three years ago, were not suitable for this occasion because they are 'ineffective at close range'. This is nonsense-it explicitly contradicts the manufacturer's claim that tasers are actually meant for close range and in fact can be lethal if fired in too close of a range.
It gets better, folks. It turns out the knife wasn't a machete at all, but a 10cm hunting knife. Also, while EPS spokesmen said the shots were fired when Lippa was six feet away from the cops, at least one witness said Lippa was still 25-30 steps from the police when he was shot. This is justifiable use of lethal force?
